When you focus on creating great content on your website, traffic increases much more  slowly than with ads, but that traffic could continue arriving for years through search engine results.

The truth is, methods used to optimize your website for search engines have not changed for nearly a decade except for in very minor ways.  There is a reason for that.  Search engines are still doing the same thing.  They are still simply trying to match content to the right person at the right time.

What about Ai and ChatGPT?

Many people are now bypassing search engines, and are using Ai platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude.  This means that SEO now should be considered Search EVERYWHERE Optimization.  Rather than being concerned however, it may be reassuring to know that Ai actually depends upon Search Engines for much of their information.  So if you are optimized for Search, you are optimized for Ai.

What has amplified since the release of ChatGPT is the importance of high quality content that has depth.  It is no longer just on search engines that people are exploring. As the world’s SEO expert Neil Patel says, it is now “Search Everywhere Optimization.”

What not to focus on

In Google’s documentation for getting started with SEO, they provide a very useful list of things to NOT focus on or do.

  • Using direct copies of other people’s content
  • Trying to use keywords in your domain name
