Tip 1:  Eames Institute Marketing Contact

I reached out to the Marketing Team to connect, and heard back from Abby McBeth, Social Media & Community Manager.

The Eames folks are active on LinkedIn, and are using it to make announcements.  Here is what she wrote back:

“Thank you for reaching out to the Eames Institute. We’re thrilled to be the new stewards of the former Birkenstock Campus in Novato, Calif. This extraordinary space will enable us to expand our programming and reach a broader audience, while serving as a permanent anchor for creativity and innovation in the Bay Area.

Below are some FAQs to help answer some of your questions.

  • Hiring/Career Opportunities:

All current open roles are posted on the Eames Institute’s Careers page. While we are in the beginning stages of museum planning, we anticipate this project to create exciting volunteer and career opportunities in the coming years and over time. Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date with the latest.

  • Partnership Requests:

We’re excited to partner with exceptional vendors and local organizations to help make the museum a safe, accessible, global destination for art and design. We look forward to getting in touch.

  • Visit Requests:

We cannot wait to host the public in the future. For now, we are not accepting public visits to the Birkenstock Campus. The good news is that the Eames Archives in Richmond, Calif., is open to ticketed and private tours. Additionally, our “Past as Prologue” exhibition remains on view and open to the public seven days a week at the Transamerica Pyramid Center in San Francisco until October 31st, 2025. Learn about all the ways to visit The Eames Institute here. “

Tip 1:  Eames Institute Museum – Details

The museum will be housed in the former Birkenstock campus in Novato, California, 28 miles north of San Francisco. This new cultural destination will feature a wide range of offerings, including art and design exhibitions, makerspaces and workshops, educational programming, accessible public open space, culinary and retail experiences, and a rotating display of the Eames Collection archives and other major collections.

The Institute has partnered with the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and San Francisco–based EHDD to reimagine the design of the campus into a dynamic public space that honors its architectural legacy while opening it to new generations of guests.

A little bit of background, Charles Aemes’ daughter bought property in Sonoma, who passed it to her daughter, Llisa Demetrios.   Demetios is currently the Chief Curator of the Eames Institute. The President and CEO of the insitute is John Cary.

Aemes Ranch.  Per Moe, they are selling all other properties.

The institute is partially funded by Air BnB cofounder Joe Gebbia, who is also an industrial designer and was influenced by Eames’ designs substantially.

Estimated completion date 2028.

A search of the San Rafael Planning and Permit databases does not show anything yet filed.

In thinking big picture, we have the Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Birkenstock building, these two buildings together, with the funding of an AirBnB founder, could be enough to anchor a migration of the design community from SF to Marin.

Restoration Hardware is headquartered here.  Arhus is opening their largest store, also in the same shopping center in Corte madera.  Pegasus, a large interior design company has opened in San Rafael.

I think there is going to be a lot of movement in commercial leasing as a result of this purchase.
